Grade Reading Book Report Format
The required format is as follows:
1. Write a heading on the paper:

Grade
Class (Reading/Adv. Reading)
Date:
2. Write the title and author on the first two lines:
Title
Author
3. Write the report in three paragraphs. It is understood that each
paragraph will contain a topic sentence and at least four additional
sentences.
* In the first paragraph briefly give the setting and summarize
the plot of the book.
* In the second paragraph tell whether or not the story kept you
involved, and why or why not. Be specific in your references to
characters, plot ideas, or writing style/language.
* In the third paragraph answer the question, “What did you
learn about people or life from this book?” Again, refer to
specific events and characters in the story to explain your
thoughts.
4. The report should be typed in 12 pt., Times New Roman font, and
correctly formatted according to the above directions.
***If you are unable to access a computer at home, you may neatly hand-
write your report following the instructions above on the pages which
follow.

Below are some notes to help you complete your paragraphs:
1. Instructions: In the first paragraph briefly give the setting and
summarize the plot of the book.

c. What is the setting? Does it shift? Explain in detail.
2. Instructions: In the second paragraph tell whether or not the story kept
you involved, and why or why not. Be specific in your references to
characters, elements of plot, imagery, tone, diction, etc.
a. Did the story keep you involved? Why or why not?
b. Does the author use much detail when he describes his characters?
Explain.
c. Does the plot move fast or slow? Why or why not?
d. Does the imagery the author uses keep you interested in the story?
Explain and give an example from the book.
e. What is the author’s tone? What examples can you find to show this?
3. Instructions: In the third paragraph answer the question, “What did you
learn about people or life from this book?” Again, refer to specific
events and characters in the story to explain your thoughts.
a. What is the theme of the book? NOTE: There is always a theme. What
lesson did the main character(s) learn(s) as a result of the conflict they
encountered? How can you apply the lesson the main character learned
to your life? In what way(s) would it make a difference in your future
actions.
i. You must find something. You may not tell me there is not a theme.
4. Things to keep in mind:
Your Book Report is a final product.
A rough draft should have been completed prior to you typing or
neatly handwriting your Book Report
You should have edited your rough draft for publication. This means
you checked all spelling, grammar, and punctuation. You used a
dictionary if necessary to do this.
