Definition
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) must be an integral part of an established curriculum and directly related to the student’s
major area of study. [8CFR 214.2(f)(10)(i)]. It is authorization to participate temporarily in an internship, co-operative
education or required thesis/dissertation project.
Before You Start, Have You…

Completed a year (Fall and Spring semester) in F1 status, and one semester in your degree program at George Mason?

Earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 (Graduate Students) or 2.0 (Undergraduate Students)?

1. Bring detailed position description to
meet with OIPS advisor to confirm that
the position meets CPT requirements. You
should do this before completing the
form. Not all positions are CPT-eligible.
2.
You, the employer and your academic
advisor complete the CPT application.
3. Obtain
the Work Agreement for Co-op
and ask the employer to complete.
4. Meet with Debbie Zuiker in Career
Thursday or Friday from 10:00AM-
12:00PM or by appointment. Bring
completed CPT application, Work
Agreement and $25 fee.
5. Return to OIPS, drop off signed CPT
application with OIPS-approved position
description
6. Allow up to two weeks for the CPT I-20
7. You will be required to complete
Learning Goals and an Evaluation
The internship course must count towards
your degree (required or elective)

2. Enroll in a Mason for-credit
internship course in the semester you
will be participating in CPT.
3. Complete your section of CPT application

6. At OIPS, drop off CPT application with
OIPS-approved position description
7. Allow up to two weeks for the CPT I-20
The training must be required to complete
the Thesis/Dissertation

2. Enroll in 799 (thesis) or 999 (dissertation)
3. Complete your section of CPT application

b. Advisor/Chair letter of support
- Must be signed and on department

Important Information
You may begin CPT only after you have obtained your I-20 endorsed with CPT authorization.
After you have dropped off your application, additional documentation may be requested.
You may participate part-time during spring and fall semesters and part or full-time during the summer.
F1 students who complete 12 months of full-time CPT are not eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Students with graduate assistantships may be required to obtain a letter of release from the assistantship.
If you receive any compensation associated with the training (such as stipend or reimbursement) you must enroll in CPT.
Total employment (on and off campus combined) may not exceed 20 hours/week during fall and spring semesters.
Please plan ahead as it can take up to two weeks for OIPS to process your work authorization, or even longer if you submit an
incomplete packet.
