THINGS TO DO PRIOR TO THE FUNERAL
Advise relatives, friends, and neighbors.
Be prepared to provide your funeral director with the following information for a death certificate
and/or obituary (to provide us with the information, please visit www.arrittfuneralhome.com
preplanning and fill out the Preplan a Funeral form):
Decedent’s full name and address.
Date, time, and place of death.
Birth date and birth place.
Social Security Number.
Name of spouse, parents, children, and siblings, also with the city and state in which they reside.
Number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Names may be listed if you wish.
Church, employment, clubs, and organizations of membership.
Discuss preferred time and place of funeral service and burial with funeral director and/or clergy.
Is the decedent a veteran? In what branch of the military did they serve? Would you like a flag to
be present at the service? If yes, locate the discharge papers (DD-214) and present them to your
funeral director.
Military or other organization participation in service.
Memorial donations.
Select and notify clergy to conduct service.
Select casket or urn and outer burial container at funeral home and finalize arrangements.
Burial plot selected and its location.
Arrange for music and musicians, if desired.
Provide clothing – everything the person would normally wear. Shoes are optional.
Inform the funeral home if a beautician is necessary.
Provide jewelry (including glasses) to be worn. Inform the funeral director if any should be
removed and returned prior to burial or cremation.
Order flowers, casket spray, etc. from the florist of your choice.
Select and notify casket bearers (six to eight). Give the list to your funeral director.
Notify the funeral director if any death certificates are needed. Things like bank accounts, insurance
policies, personal property, and utilities will most often require at least a copy.

THINGS TO DO AFTER THE SERVICE
Contact your local Social Security office for any benefits that may be available. In most cases, a Social
Security one-time payment of $255 is available to a surviving spouse or a minor child.
Send thank you cards to those friends who sent flowers, food, or provided help to you and your family.
If the deceased was a veteran, he/she may be eligible for a flag, headstone, and/or other benefits.
Please provide a copy of the discharge papers and your funeral director will assist you in working with
the Department of Veterans Affairs.
If your family desires a monument or headstone, contact the funeral home to set up an appointment.
