Some tribal governments apply for grants,

Funding allows agencies to stand alone

Starbucks SWOT Analysis
Strengths Weaknesses
Starbucks Corporation is a very profitable
organization, earning in excess of $600 million
in 2004.
It is a global coffee bran

reputatio

.
Starbu

workforce.
The organi

statement.
Starbu
cks has a reputation for new product
development and creativity. However, they
remai
n vulnerable to the possi
bility that their
innovation m

The organi
zation has a strong prese
nce in
the United States of Ameri
c
a. It is often
argued that they need to look for a port f olio of
countries, in order to spread business risk.
The organi
zation is dependant on a main
competitive advantage, the retail of coffe
e.
This
could make them slow to diversify
into
other secto
rs should the need aris
e.
Opportunities Threats
Starbucks are very good at taking advantage of
opportunties.
In 2004 the company cre

The company has the opportunity to expand its

Co-brandin

Nike SWOT Analysis
Strengths Weaknesses
Nike is a very competitive organization.
Nike ha
s no factories. It does not tie up ca
sh in
building
s and manufacturing worker s. Th
is
make
s a very lean organi
zation.
Nike is st
rong at research and developm
ent.
Nike is a global brand.
The organi
zation does hav e a diversifie
d
rang
e of sports product s. Ho wever, the
income of the business is
still heavily
depe
ndent upon its share of
the footwear
market. This may leave it vulnerable if for
any rea
son its market share erod
es.
The retail
sector is very price sens
itive.
Nike doe
s have its own retailer in Ni
ke
Town.
However, most of its income is
derived from selling into retailers.
Opportunities Threats
Product development offers Nike many
opportunities. The brand is fiercely defended by
its owners whom truly believe that Nike is not a
fashio
n brand. Howeve
r, like it or not,
con
sumers that wear Nike product do not
always buy it to participate in sport. This creates
its own opportunities, since produ ct coul
d
become unfa
shionable before it wears o u
t i.e.
con
sumers need to replace sho
es.
There is also the opportunit y to develop
prod
ucts such as sport wear, sunglasses
and
jewelle
ry. Such high value items do tend
to have
asso
ciated wi
th them, high profits.
The bu
siness could also be develop
ed
internationally, building upon its strong global
brand recognition. There are many markets that
have the disposable income to spen d on high
value sp
orts goods. For example, eme rgi
ng
markets
such as China an d India have
a new
rich
er generation of consu m
ers.
Nike is exposed to the international
nature of tra
de
. It buys and sells in
different cu
rrencies and so costs an
d
margi
ns are not stable over long periods
of time. Such an exposure coul
d mean
that Nike may
be manufacturing and/or
selling at a loss. This
is an issue that
face
s all global bran
ds.
The ma
rket for sport s shoes an
d
garm
ents is very com
petitive.
As discussed above in weaknesses, the
retail sector is becoming price
comp
etitive. This ultimately
means that
con
sumers are shoppin
g around for a
better deal.
