Purpose & Objectives:
Purpose
The aim of the project is to produce a concise yet comprehensive guide to good practice in the
development and implementation of active network management systems to be applied within the
context of the UK electricity distribution system
Project Objectives
In order to direct effective ANM solutions within the UK electricity network, it is important for clear
information on potential solutions to be available, along with guidance on the likelihood that ANM may
offer an effective alternative to provision of system infrastructure.
Production of the guide will take two phases:
1. Provide an short ‘state of play’ document detailing the level of active management current
implemented.
2. Production of the final guide.
The initial state of play document a snapshot of current scheme and give some feedback on the
lessons learned, the repeatability and the potential barriers.
The final guide will provide not only a valuable reference and information source but will also strive to
produce consistency in the approach and application of ANM within DNO networks in the UK. The
ANM Good Practice Guide will draw upon the work carried out by other projects within PG03, the
experiences of DNO’s in deploying ANM techniques to existing networks, and the aspirations of
customers, generators, the Regulator and other key stakeholders. The guide will indicate the
commercial factors that may influence effective deployment.
The guide it will;
• be directed at DNO’s, generators, consultants, manufacturers, industry bodies and academics
with an interest in developing ANM solutions
• provide information on potential ANM solutions
• consider the situation where ANM should be considered
• utilise key stakeholder for the ongoing review and development of the document
• engage a consultant to review the content, edit and format the document
• be published on the ENSG website
