Handout 3: Making Recipe Cards
How can nonreaders and beginning readers follow recipes? The 
answer is through pictographic RECIPE CARDS.
The cards are like a rebus. Break down the recipe into individual 
steps. Write each step on a separate index card (either 3" x 5"  
or 4" x 6"). Draw a picture to illustrate each step, and use 
words as labels to make the picture clear. Laminate the finished 
cards, if possible. Display each step in sequence. To make stands 
to hold the recipe cards, grasp each card bottom with a clothes-
pin, then mount the bottom of the clothespin in a wad of clay or 
playdough.
Here’s what a set of recipe cards might look like for the recipe 
“Happy Trails Mix.”

2 cups Chex or other cereal with large pieces
¼ cup dried fruit bits
¼ cup raisins
¼ cup yogurt-covered carob pieces 
measuring cups
plastic resealable bag
 Measure ingredients
 Empty all ingredients into bag
 Close, then shake bag to mix
 Pour into a bowl and eat
Variation: Use any combination of dried fruits, nuts, and seeds.
Note: Because of their potential as a choking hazard, raisins 
should be served only to children who are 4 years old or older.
