Friendly Letter Format
*For the purpose of consistency the following format is the expectation for
students writing friendly letters in Lexington One.
The Heading: The
heading of a friendly
letter should contain
the return address
(usually two lines)
followed by a third
line with the date. In a
friendly letter the
heading is always
indented to the middle
of the page.
Example:
123 Main St.
West Newfield CT 06123
December 14, 2002
The Greeting: The greeting in a friendly letter capitalizes the first word and any noun. It normally
ends with a comma, though it might be all right to end with an exclamation point when writing to
someone with whom you are very familiar and the emphasis is appropriate.
Example:
Dear Aunt Miriam,
The Body: The body of the letter contains the main text. Each new paragraph should be indented.
The Closing: The left edge of the closing line in a friendly letter begins in the center, at the same
column as the heading. The closing begins with a capital letter and ends with a comma. Skip from
one to three spaces before adding the signature.
Example:
Truly yours,
The Signature: The left edge of the signature line in a friendly letter begins in the center, at the
same column as the heading (directly below the closing).

Dear Susan,
It feels like such a long time since the last time I saw you. I know
it's only been a few weeks, but I miss you. So far my summer has
been great!
I spend my all my
weekends at the beach. I am getting a nice tan and you can no
longer say I am paler than you. I have been playing lots of
volleyball, surfing and building a nice collection of sea shells. Just
this past weekend I took second place in a sandcastle building
contest!
On the weekdays I
work. I drive an ice cream truck around and sell ice cream to the
kids. It is so cool. It is a combination of the two things I love most,
ice cream and kids. The pay isn't too great but I love the job so
much.
I hope the summer's
been going well for you too. There's only a month and a half left in
summer vacation and after that it's back to school. Would you like
to meet up some time before school starts?
Your friend,
Elizabeth
