The Farewell Speech
(50% of Semester Exam)
Due: Thursday, May 24, 2012
The purpose of this speech is to demonstrate your ability to write and present an entertaining and informative
speech that will commemorate this school year thus far.
There are many occasions that require a guest speaker to address a group of people in an entertaining and
informative way. As this is your last speech of the semester, you are to write a speech that sums up this
semester for you. As you brainstorm ideas and prepare your speech, consider experiences that you have had
and how they have affected you. Think of special people that have been a part of your life. Consider how you
have changed, what lessons you have learned, and what you are looking forward to.
Don’t just go through your daily schedule. And don’t say anything negative. Be friendly, sincere, and positive.
You may be humorous. Make sure your examples are vivid and specific!
Allow yourself sufficient time to practice. Make your last speech your best one!
The speech must be typed and have an MLA heading.
You will need to speak for a minimum of 2-3 minutes (total).
Follow the basic speech outline (handout provided in class previously and another copy can be found on my
CHS website).
Semester Exam Review
Study your notes for the following chapters, paying special attention to the end of chapter review sections: Looking
Back, Speech Vocabulary, and To Remember (reread the chapters if necessary).
Ch. 13: Effective Language, p. 338
Ch. 14: Effective Delivery, p. 370
Ch. 17: Speeches to Persuade, p. 468
Ch. 18: Impromptu Speaking, p. 496
Ch. 20: Speeches for Special Occasions, p. 544
